Last week  Ellie Rose found  a little ladybird on the classroom windowsill! There was great excitement in the room as all gathered around to have a look!! I used the opportunity to examine the parts of the insect with the magnifying glass. We counted his legs and spots and then carefully placed him in a petri dish with breathing holes .We released him into the garden the next day after every child had a chance to ” study”him! To day ,Matilda found a dead butterfly in the dinosaur basket! The magnifying glass came out again and we looked at body parts, counted legs and wings and classified him as an insect!!Again, it gave me a chance to discuss what is happening in Spring ,the awakening of plants and insects and to stress to these little” scientists” the interconnection between flowers and insects. It is such an exciting time and I look forward to sharing many more magical moments of discovery with my little ones!

At last after a very wet and dreary Winter,  Spring  is here. The children are so happy to venture outdoors again. We could hear the little lambs bleating from the classroom and last week went to see them in the field. We counted  4 pairs of twins and a set of triplets and they were so cute!We looked at the little buds opening on the trees in the garden and the blackcurrant bushes are literally opening and growing in front of our eyes.To day after introducing the Spring Flower Matching cards, we went on  a flower hunt around the garden and there was great excitement when we found the very last snowdrop, yellow and mauve crocuses,primroses,pansies,primulas,for-get-me- nots, daffodils, tulips and wallflowers(about to open). It once again, brought classroom work to life!We open the door and  listen to the birds sing and maybe to morrow we will take our little singing birds on a walk to see if we can recognize the different songs! We are rejoicing and so happy experiencing nature at her best with every day miracles unfolding in front of our eyes.

The children have settled back into the new term with their usual good humour and enthusiasm. Even though we are confined to the classroom due to the atrocious weather, the birds visiting the feeders provide much entertainment. To day we enjoyed listening to the  thrush sing non stop.  The children were delighted when I told them that he was looking for a mate  and together they would build their nest.

They have settled so well into their work, taking on new challenges daily. The classroom is a hive of activity and at the moment insets and word building with the movable alphabet are very popular. We have finished an African animal project, proudly displayed on our wall. New work is being introduced daily and the children absorb and enjoy each new activity.

The children put on a wonderful performance of the the nativity story for Mums, Dads, Grannys and Grandads on the last day of school. The atmosphere was magical as they sang their little hearts out with all the joyful Christmas songs. It was a wonderful surprise for all when Santa appeared and rewarded each child with a bird feeder.

Last terms garden bird and owl projects were presented by each child to the class and are now proudly mounted on the school wall.

We are already in the midst of December and the throes of Winter. For the past few weeks as the weather changed, the children have been confined to the classroom. They watch the birds feed and are now settled into a routine of work. The class is a hive of activity and all are being challenged by new work. We put up the Christmas decorations, made stars and Angels  and lovely Christmas wreaths to take home. The highlight was putting up the crib! They love the Christmas story and never tire of it.We are busy practicing our Nativity Play  for the concert on Friday!   To morrow we shall make Christmas cookies! The children are so excited at the moment and have no problem counting down to Christmas.1 It is so good to be in their midst at this very special time!
